Only One Thing Is Needed This Christmas

Only One Thing is Needed This Christmas, Do You Have It?

Has the stress of Christmas overshadowed your peace on earth and good will toward men? With the deadline growing ever closer, pressure is mounting for many of us as we race to get everything done.

It’s so easy to get distracted by all of the preparation that goes into Christmas that we totally miss the point. Instead of enjoying the celebration of our Savior’s birth, we’re busy trying to put on the perfect Martha Stewart Christmas.

Speaking of Martha… there’s another Martha who let the distraction of all the preparations of a celebration with Jesus get to her. As she rushed around trying to get everything done she came to the boiling point when her sister wouldn’t leave Jesus’ side to help her. In Luke chapter 10 we’re told that she cried out to Jesus saying, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

Jesus responded to Martha’s cry for help by telling her, “You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better”.

Both Mary and Martha had made choices about how to prepare for Jesus’ visit. Mary had chosen to sit at his feet and just be near him, while Martha had chosen to spend her time making the perfect preparations for his visit. Jesus said that Mary’s choice was the better one.

Naturally we want to go to every party we’re invited to, buy our kids everything they want, have the best decorations and a perfect Martha Stewart Christmas. But Jesus reminds us that we only need one thing, and that is time spent at his feet.

So… as you make final preparations this year for your Christmas celebrations, make the choice to take time to sit at the feet of Jesus. After all, He is the only thing you really need!

I’d love to hear how you plan to incorporate time at his feet this Christmas season. Share your idea with my readers by leaving a comment.

Thanks for a sweet reminder of priorities at Christmas. God is so good. I’ve heard the story of my husband’s mother going to Christmas service on Christmas as a child for years and always wanted to do that. This year God has provided a way. As “Greeters” we have the month of December. I am so excited to put presents on hold until I worship with His body, His birthday and my gratefulness for His love. This year will be very special. Happy Birthday Jesus!
